Tartu Complex event consists of three events this year

SEB Tartu Complex Event which usually consists of four events – Tartu Maraton (cross-country skiing), Tartu Jooksumaraton (cross-country running), Tartu Rattaralli (road cycling) and Tartu Rattamaraton (MTB) – will this year consist of three events because Tartu Maraton was cancelled due to lack of snow.

“Because there are two cycling events and one running event, cyclists obviously have a notable advantage in the overall Tartu Complex Event points competition,” said the director of Club Tartu Maraton events Indrek Kelk. “But you also have to take in consideration that good cyclists aren’t always that good at running and time differences are usually bigger in the running marathon than in the cycling marathons. So, strong runners can also make a difference in the overall competition”.

Six years ago, in 2008, when Tartu Maraton was also cancelled and Tartu Complex Event also consisted of three events, Allan Oras won the overall competition. He was named the best Estonian cyclist of the year in 2009.

“Of course cyclists have an advantage this year but I think that good runners will also make a challenge,“ said the European MTB champion of 2009 Allan Oras. Oras is chasing the overall first place this year to, but added that another good Estonian cyclist Rene Mandri is also favourite for the win. Mandri proved his spectacular marathon running level last autumn when he finished Tartu City Marathon in the 4th place.

Indrek Kelk added that the five times Tartu Complex Event winner Rait Pallo can also be considered as a favourite despite the fact that one of his best events, skiing was cancelled this year.

First stage of the Tartu Complex Event 2014 starts with the 32nd Tartu Jooksumaraton on the 11th of May.
