Latvian skater Roberts Pundurs won the 7th Tartu Inline Skating Sprint, a warmup event for the 11th Tartu Inline Skating Marathon. Among women Estonian Enel Kõrva triumphed for the 4th year in a row. In the beginning of the knockout races the rain started to pour so the final standings were made based on the qualification’s results.
For the first time in the history of the event the sprinters raced on a quick and exciting 100 meters distance (previously 600 m). In qualifying Latvian Roberts Pundurs clocked the fastest time with 11,068 seconds, finishing nearly 0,6 seconds ahead of Estonians Mart Markus and Marten Liiv. At the womens competition a local favourite Enel Kõrva finished with a time of 12,644 seconds. Russian Julia Barakova claimed second place in qualifiyng (+0,653), Estonian Elizabeth Jõgi finished third (+0,721). Latvians were also the fastest in People’s Sprint for the amateur skaters. Among men Arvis Miezitis finished with a time of 12,197 seconds and Signe Malnaca was the fastest women in that category (13,724).
Rain was expected to fall during the event and it began to pour in the beginning of the knockout races. Race’s jury and sprinters made a decision not to skate anymore and to have the results finalized based on the qualifying results. „There is no inline skating sprint organized in wet conditions because it’s too dangerous. A couple of sprinters would’ve liked to continue today but most of the skaters didn’t – there is a long race ahead for them tomorrow,“ said race’s chief referee Robert Peets.
A total of 48 skaters participated in the 7th Tartu Inline Skating Sprint. Tomorrow the 11th Tartu Inline Staking Marathon will be held with nearly 1000 people starting. 42 km, 21 km and 10 km races will take place.
