Today's 11th Tartu Inline Skating Marathon's 42 km distance was won by Latvian Reinis Znotins, who in the group finish beated Mart Markus and last year's winner Marten Liiv. Among women Enel Kõrva took her fourth winning of the Tartu Inline Skating Marathon.
The group finish was not a surprise – 26-member leading group went ahead of the other skaters already on half of the way. However, there was a winning chance for 18 men in the final downhill. On the final meters, Latvian Znotins showed the fastest legs, beating second place Markus by 11 and third place owner Liiv by 24 hundreds of a second. "It was difficult to get away from the group, because some of the guys were really fast. That's why I thought during the race that the only chance for winning is in the group finish," Znotins said.
Mart Markus, who finished second, told after the race that his methods against winning man did not succeed. "We tried to do some spurts with teammates in hope to get ahead with a smaller group. But the others, headed by Reinis, managed to catch us. When there were 10 km left, it was clear that there will be a massive group finish,“ he said.
When Enel Kõrva took her fourth winning of the Tartu Inline Skating Sprint yesterday, then today she managed to get the fourth title also in the Tartu Inline Skating Marathon. In a tense final sprint Kõrva (1.15.01,24) beated Russians Jevgenia Radionik (+0,38) and Julia Barakova (+0,75). "Today it was my day and my chance as the top athletes were not present. I know that I am fast at the end and I just believed in myself," she said after the finish.
In total of 838 skaters took part of today's races. 423 of them skated the long 42 km distance, 253 skated the half marathon and 162 skated the shortest 10 km distance.
The next event in the Cube series is the 20th Tartu Rattamaraton, which takes place on September 24th.
