Organizers of the 44th Tartu Maraton had to announce today that the event planned for the 21st of February will be cancelled because of total lack of snow. All registered participants will get a refund of 50% of the payed entry fee.

Yesterday the organizers had to cancel Tartu Maraton pre-events, scheduled to take place on current weekend. Today it was already clear that there is no chance for the main events also because of absolutely no snow on the course and weather forecast predicts no significant amount of extra snow during the next week.

„We planned to announce our final decision on Monday but there is no point in delaying. It is very clear for us – there is no chance to organize Tartu Maraton this year. We have absolutely no snow in Southern-Estonia,“ commented race director Indrek Kelk.

One of the back-up plans was to organize Tartu Maraton during several days on a 2,6km artificial snow lap similarly to this years Jizerska Padesatka. Organizers asked registered participants weather this would be a sufficent back-up plan for this year but the general understanding among participants was that there is no point organizing this sort of Tartu Maraton this year.

„We made a poll amoung our registered participants and asked if we should do it. We had about 2100 answers – about 50% of the people registered and 80% of them answered that there is no point doing this version,“ said Indrek Kelk.

All the registered participants can get a refund of 50% of the paid entry fee. This sum can be transferred either to the next years Tartu Maraton, to any of the other Tartu Marathon Cube 2016 event or participants can just ask back 50% of the paid entry fee.

More info concering the refund will be sent directly to the participants.
