A total of 1325 participants enjoyed the snowy weather of Otepää on the first day of the 44th Tartu Maraton’s main events. By exception, Estonia’s cross-country skiing team member and double olympic champion Andrus Veerpalu’s son Andreas Veerpalu took part of the first amateurs’ race.
The reason why 22 years old Veerpalu will not take part on tomorrow’s elite race is simple: on Sunday’s evening he is travelling to Lahti’s WCH, where his first start is the 15 km CT on Wednesday. This is also the reason why Veerpalu didn’t ski the whole marathon today, instead he stepped down from the course after the second six kilometers long lap. „Main goal for today was to do one strong workout. Conditions weren’t easy, because it was hard to race alone with a strong headwind,“ said Veerpalu. „Anyway, I think that it is great that Tartu Maraton takes place nevertheless on this quite long lap made of artificial snow,“ he added.
44th Tartu Maraton continues at tommorow morning with the elite group’s race – women start at 8.50 am and men five minutes later. In addition to the elite race there are two amateurs’ races on Sunday, which start at 11 am and 14 pm respectively. The live webcast from all the Tartu Maraton’s races can be seen on the Club Tartu Maraton webpage.
