This year’s 19th Tartu Rattamaraton is greeting a longtime cycling friend Johan Laas, who has completed all the 35 cycling road races and 18 mountain bike races organised by Club Tartu Marathon.
When Tartu Rattamaraton is going to turn 19 years old next Sunday, then one day later, on the 19th of September, 53-time finisher celebrates his 75th birthday.
We asked from Laas, what helps him to keep himself in such a good shape to complete long distances while cycling. “I am a bit lucky, but actually the consistency. I write down how many kilometres I have ridden during my trainings – that disciplines me,” said Laas.
Laas was an active cycling coach for a long time and was able to compete with young boys in the trainings even while being 40 years old. When the 1st Tartu Rattaralli took place, Laas just quit from his position as a trainer and the first free season gave him an opportunity to take part in the Rattaralli. “And that was how it went, have not wanted to skip even one race,” mentioned Laas.
In addition to consistency, Laas has been motivated to race to get an emotion that comes from cycling, the pleasure and volition to complete the distance. Besides that, Laas is cycling to keep him strong and healthy. In the past his main goal was to get a good result, but now he is enjoying the cycling with all the other cyclist on the beautiful South-Estonian landscape.
