Mukunga from Kenya managed to beat local favorite in the 33rd Tartu Jooksumaraton

Ibrahim Wachira Mukunga from Kenya won the 33rd Tartu Jooksumaraton beating winner from the last two years Roman Fosti (EST) by more than a minute. Liina Luik was the best women.

„I knew that Fosti is fast in the last few kilometres. So I decided to push hard already from the beginning. I managed to shake him off my tail after 7-8 kilometres,“ said Mukunga who finished with a time of 1:13.23.

Fosti actually made his best run in the Tartu Jooksumaraton beating his own Estonians best time 1:15.30 by more than half a minute but was still disapointed with the second place. „My aim was to win today. But maybe I went too strong in the beginning. Feeling was okey again in the latter part of the race but it was too late already. Mukunga was gone,“ said Fosti who was a bit more than a minute faster than the third man – Kaupo Sasmin.

Liina Luik was the best female runner today finishing with a time of 1:29.07. „For me it was a good tempo traning. My aim is to run good in August in Beijing in the World Championships. Form is so-so right now,“ said Luik.

Ivar Ivanov managed to claim the Tartu Maraton Cube leader jersey by finishing fourth today in the 33rd Tartu Jooksumaraton. Vahur Teppan is second. Tatjana Mannima is the leader in the womens consideration.

A total of 4374 runners and nordic walkers started today in the 33rd Tartu Jooksumaraton.
