Today, on May 9, the 33rd Tartu Jooksumaraton children’s races took place - TILLUraces for pre-school and grade school children and MINImarathons for elementary and secondary school students. Altogether there were 3843 participants.
In TILLUraces (distances 400 and 800 meters), there was a record number of participants - 3032. In MINImarathon (with 2 km distance) 812 students took part in. Last year, the numbers were accordingly - 2858 and 861, altogether 3718. The Tartu Jooksumaraton children’s races took place for the 16th time. Each year the number of participants has increased.
“Although, there was some mud on the start line, the faces of little runners were happy and excited. The yearly rise of our little participants in the children’s races is a clear sign that being active in fresh air is getting more and more popular among children and students,” said Kunnar Karu, the race director of the 33rd Tartu Jooksumaraton. “For us, it is very important that all children could get a positive emotion from participating in sports events and I’m sure we filled that plan with the help of sunshine we had today in Tartu.”
Together with the children’s races, the Charity Run was held in the Tähtvere Sports Park. The Charity Run (4,3 km) is meant for everyone - runners and walkers - and it’s purpose this year was to help overweight children. Altogether 1151 participants with the help of pharmaceutical company TEVA and SA TÜ Kliinikumi Lastefond gathered a donation of 8481€.
The 33rd Tartu Jooksumaraton children’s events are the second stage of the Tartu Maratoni Mini Cube series in 2015. The next stage will be held in three weeks during the 33rd Tartu Rattaralli events.
The children’s events held today were a warp-up for tomorrow, May 10, when the 33rd Tartu Jooksumaraton’s main races (23 km and 10 km) will be held.
