Retro atmosphere prevailed at the 55th birthday of Tartu Maraton

Tartu Maraton celebrated its 55th birthday last weekend with a retro ski race and with a party afterwards. Hundreds of people gathered to celebrate the jubilee of the 3rd oldest ski marathon in the world.

„The whole weekend proved that Tartu Maraton has a very special place in the cultural history of Estonia,“ said Tartu Maraton race director Indrek Kelk. „The decision to start to organize Tartu Maraton races in 1960 was one of the key points in the history of Estonian sport“.

On Saturdays afternoon 100 skiers started in the retro ski race with cross-country skis often older than the skiers themselves and in ski suits which date from the years when Estonia was still part of the Soviet Union. The 6,5km race went along the Tartu Maraton course, started and finished in Tehvandi.

The night finished in Kääriku where party at the local Sports Centre also continued with the retro vibe.

First Tartu Maraton took place on the 16th of January, 1960. This year thr 43rd Tartu Maraton will take place and early bird prices are still available until the 25th of January. Week before the main event 4th Tartu Relay Marathon and Open Track events on three different distances (63km, 31km, 16km) will take place.
